Apprenticeship Case Study

Apprenticeship, Upholstery Workshop Case Studies

In September 2022 we opened our brand-new apprenticeship workshop with 5 new recruits. None of our new apprentices had much experience in upholstery, however, they all came with the right attitude to learn more about Modern Upholstery!

We start our apprentices with learning the basics and becoming confident with hand tools and building up their hand strength. We like to keep a mixture of fun upholstery projects and working on real products for customers while learning as much as possible about the business.

“I had heard about Lang and Potter through a family member but before that, I had never heard of the company as there so hidden in Plymouth, I’m a practical person so the apprenticeship interested me, I really enjoy the bit of college work alongside the practical elements. My favourite thing is learning new skills and techniques from different people within the business” – Tierney, 20

“I applied for the vacancy online, I had heard it was a good company but I didn’t know too much about upholstery, I knew it would be a different career to follow from the other things I had tried. I really like being on my feet and the practical hands-on element, I can see how I’m expanding my knowledge in upholstery. The early mornings take a little getting used to but I like the half-day Fridays as well” – Tommy, 17

“A family friend had worked for Lang and Potter for several years and told me about the type of work he did, I really liked the sound of it so I applied when I knew they were looking for apprentices. I had never done upholstery before but I was excited to give it a go, after a tour of the business I was offered the apprenticeship. I really like working on the production pieces and knowing they are eventually going onto luxury boats and traveling the world” – Liam, 17

“I had no idea what I wanted to do, a family friend told me about the vacancies and suggested I give it a go, it was totally different from everything else out there. I am a practical person who likes working with people and being active, I’m not a theory person so this was perfect. I really like using all the hand tools and working in busy workshops with people” – Sam, 17
